Natural Rubber and Silicone Membranes for Vacuum Presses

Membranes

A vacuum press membrane is a key component of any vacuum or membrane press, directly affecting pressing quality and process reliability. A properly selected membrane determines how accurately the material follows the shape of the workpiece, whether it can withstand the required temperature and pressure, and how long it retains its properties during operation.

The vacuum-presses.com catalogue includes vacuum press membranes designed for professional furniture manufacturing, woodworking, veneering, laminating, thermoforming and other industrial applications. We supply membranes for both small workshops and large-scale production facilities throughout Europe.

What Is a Vacuum Press Membrane and Why Is It Needed?

A vacuum membrane is an elastic sheet that uses vacuum and atmospheric pressure to press the material against a workpiece or mould. Thanks to its high elasticity, the membrane accurately follows the geometry of the part and applies uniform pressure across the entire surface.

Vacuum press membranes are used for:

  • veneering and bonding curved components;
  • laminating panel materials;
  • pressing PVC films;
  • forming complex 3D furniture fronts;
  • processing composites and thermoplastics.

The type and quality of the membrane directly affect the final result. An incorrectly selected membrane may lose its properties more quickly, tear prematurely and cause production defects.

Types of Vacuum Press Membranes

Vacuum press membranes are available in several main types, depending on the material and operating conditions. Each type has specific properties and recommended areas of application.

Natural Rubber Membranes

Natural rubber membranes are a reliable and cost-effective solution for vacuum presses. They are widely used in woodworking, particularly for veneering, laminating and manufacturing curved laminated components.

Advantages of natural rubber membranes include:

  • high elasticity;
  • operating temperatures of up to 130 °C;
  • excellent tear resistance;
  • cost-effective operation;
  • easy handling and installation.

Many conventional rubber membranes have a temperature limit of approximately 80–90 °C, while the natural rubber membranes in our range can withstand temperatures of up to 130 °C. This makes them suitable for selected PVC film pressing applications.

Silicone Vacuum Press Membranes

Silicone membranes are the preferred solution for high-temperature vacuum pressing applications. They retain their elasticity under intensive use and are suitable for a wide range of industrial processes.

Key advantages of silicone membranes include:

  • operating temperatures of up to 200–250 °C, depending on the product;
  • high elasticity and accurate shape reproduction;
  • long service life under suitable operating conditions;
  • resistance to ageing and deformation;
  • suitability for PVC film pressing, sublimation, thermoforming and composite processing;
  • suitability for veneering, although silicone membranes are less resistant to mechanical damage than natural rubber membranes.

Silicone membranes are particularly suitable for forming solid-surface materials such as Corian, HI-MACS, Staron, Hanex and Kerrock. They are also used in applications where consistent results and minimal equipment downtime are essential.

How to Choose a Vacuum Press Membrane

Membrane selection should be based on operating conditions as well as price. An incorrectly selected membrane may wear out prematurely or fail to provide the required pressing quality.

Key Selection Parameters

  • Material — silicone or natural rubber;
  • Operating temperature — particularly important for PVC film pressing and thermoforming;
  • Membrane thickness — affects elasticity, surface-detail reproduction and service life;
  • Dimensions and width — must match the specifications of the press;
  • Production volume — one-off jobs or series production.

For high-temperature applications, we recommend silicone membranes. For conventional veneering and laminating, a high-quality natural rubber membrane is usually the most cost-effective choice.

Membranes for Furniture Manufacturing and Woodworking

In furniture manufacturing, vacuum membranes are used daily and subjected to demanding operating conditions. It is therefore important to select materials with proven performance characteristics.

Our membranes are used for:

  • the production of furniture fronts;
  • veneering MDF and particleboard;
  • pressing PVC films;
  • covering complex CNC-machined surfaces;
  • manufacturing doors and interior components.

We take real production conditions into account and offer membranes designed to withstand intensive pressing cycles without a significant loss of performance.
